College of Engineering

Ray James
Director, Engineering Student Advising and Development

What that really means:
I’m essentially the chief advisor for undergraduate engineering students. All engineering students will have a departmental advisor, and my job is to support the undergraduate advisors and put services in place for engineering students. I meet with prospective students who have questions about engineering (I refer those who already have an interest in a specific program to advisor in the department in question), and with students who have questions that their departmental advisors can’t answer or that require the attention of the dean of engineering.

Best advice for prospective students:
Work hard; engineering is harder than you might expect. You should develop a good work ethic and expect to be challenged in your classes here and by your career after graduation. Hard work and cooperation will carry you a long way in both.

Favorite Aggie tradition:
Muster is the most significant and meaningful tradition to me, but the wide variety of different traditions itself is an important part of Aggieland.

Must-see on campus:
The Rec Center is something special. Check it out and use it regularly. You can do better academically if you get regular exercise and recreation.

Little-known fact about me:
I’m very interested in genealogy and have done quite a bit of research into my own genealogy. I presently serve as the Lt. Commander for the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, an organization of men descended from these veterans dedicated to honoring their service to their state and nation.
